St Leonard’s College named National School Snowsports Club of the Year

St Leonard’s College Snowsports have been confirmed winners of three awards: the State School Snowsports Outstanding Achievement of the Year Award and School Snowsports Club the of Year Award and National School Snowsports Club of the Year Award for 2012!

St Leonard’s College pipped out (on a National level) Pymble Ladies’ College (Sydney) and Radford College (Canberra).

The award nomination was based on the following criteria: Athlete Performance, Participation, Development and Promotion/Advertising.

My report below for the Leonardian 2011, well documents the program and involvement of significant other. Although, this award would not have been possible without the initial support from Fiona Hicks and Virginnia Kingsford (members of the college community), two wonderful people who were already ingrained in the sport – how it started only Fiona Hicks could well explain in depth. Adjunct to their help, the years of voluntary service from Eva Clapham, the Hickey family, Geoff Jamieson and Anneke Thomson, all of whom drove the sport for many years well before my time are deserved of recognition.

Simon Gould, Head of Snowsports (2008 – 2011)

St Leonard’s College Snowsports Report for the Leonardian

St Leonard’s College Snowsports were once again recognised at the State Level and the National Ski and Snowboard Awards Evening. In 2011, we were named the ‘School Snowsports Club of the Year’ and Southern ‘School Snowsports Club of the Year’.

This year, our Development (Secondary) Camp was held at Mount Buller in the first week of the College holidays. Fourty students and five staff attended the week long Camp in rather freezing conditions. It was an amazing experience! Thank you to Ms Louise Daniels, Mrs Anneke Thomson, Mr Peter McVeigh and Mr Matt Jarman who supported this Camp during the School Holidays.

In early August, 14 Primary students and parents from Brighton and Cornish Campuses travelled to Mt Buller to enjoy a weekend of skiing and snowboarding.

The camp provided an opportunity for families to build relationships through sharing each other’s company on the slopes, over meals and in front of the lodge’s fire place.

Our National award winning program is going from strength to strength and our Primary Development Camp is an exciting opportunity for new participants.

Thank you to the students, parents and especially Mrs Anneke Thomson who helped with the Camp. Mrs Thomson’s assistance was greatly appreciated.

Following our Development Camp opportunities, a number of students, who were supported by their parents, contested the Subaru Victoria Interschools Snowsports Championships at Mt Buller. Some of the results were:

Tess Leopold – 12th place in Division 1 Snowboard GS; Amelia McDonald – 19th place in Division 2 Snowboard GS; Jack Marsh – 33rd place in Division 1 Moguls; Matthew Peter – 38th place in Division 1 Moguls; Harrison Cowie – 21st place in Division 2 Moguls; Olivia Baenziger – 38th place in Division 1 Alpine GS; Caitlin Marks – 39th place in Division 2 Alpine GS; Harley Hirsch – 22nd place in Division 2 Skier Cross.

St Leonard’s College finished in 15th place as a Co-educational College at the Championships.

St Leonard’s College Snowsports Safety Theory Lesson
Andrew Peter, over 25 years experience in Ski Patrol, spoke at length to the students about safety on the mountain for those attending the week long camp at Mount Buller. During the theory component, Andrew spoke about keeping together on the mountain, safety in numbers and the Alpine Code of Responsibility. Thank you to Andrew for giving up his time to speak with the students attending the camp.
St Leonard’s College Snowsports Development Camp Information Night
Thank you to all the students and parents who came along to this important meeting. The evening was an opportunity for students and parents to find out about the upcoming camp to Mount Buller. Staff addressed a number of areas concerning the camp including organisation, logistical matters, medical issues, what to wear on the mountain, supervised skiing/snowboaring between lessons and safety on the mountain. During the evening, it was an opportunity to further promote upcoming camps, including the Skill Development Day, Subaru Victoria Interschool Snowsports Championships and the Overseas Tour to New Zealand in 2012.
St Leonard’s College Snowsports – Equipment Sale and Sausage Sizzle
St Leonard’s Snowsports conducted it’s first ever Equipment Sale Night on Wednesday 25 May in the Merten Gallery. Whilst their were a hand full of people from the community that attended, some benefited from the low purchase prices on offer for ski/snowobard equipment and clothing. It was a good initiative with plans to conduct a similar event early May 2012. Thank you to the FOSLS for their support in enacting the evening.

2011 Victorian School Snowsports Club of the Year Award

It was uplifting to know that St Leonard’s College Snowsports has once again captured a major state award. I was delighted with the announcement and look forward to attending the Ski and Snowboard Australia Awards in Melbourne, April, to find out whether the College has been successful in representing Victoria at the National Level. It would be re-miss of me not to thank a number of people who support me in my role as Head of Snowsports, including the College Sports Administrator, Barb Traegar, our academic staff, Luisa Ingram, Louise Daniels, Anneke Thomson, Connie Mah (Yoga Fun) and FOSS, all of whom have supported the development of the Snowsports Program at the College. I look forward to the upcoming National Awards later this month.

2011 St Leonard’s College Snowsports Captains
Congratulations to Olivia Baenziger and Jack Marsh, year 12, who have been elevated to Senior Sports Captains of Snowsports for 2011. I look forward to there commitment and enthusiasm this year. Mr Gould.

2011 St Leonard’s College Snowsports Information Nights

Thank you to all the students and parents who came along to the Cornish and Brighton Campuses Information Nights, particularly the FOSS Committee Members Andrew Peter, who supported the Cornish Campus Information Night. Ian and Jenny Whiteside along with Tony Baenziger showed there support during the Brighton Campus Information Night. The comments from both Information Nights was very positive.  St Leonard’s College Snowsports is a progressive program which tailors it’s Development Camps from Novice to Advanced Skiers and Snowboarders. We want to establish a strong connection with our Snowsports Community and support Cross Campus Initiatives. If students and parents missed the opportunity to attend an Information Night, please stop by the HSC and collect a Participant Handbook and Registration Forms (7 – 12 Development Camp for Mt Buller). In addition, I am more than happy to chat to both parties in the HSC (or over the phone). Simon Gould, Head of Snowsports.

St Leonard’s Snowsports Primary Development Camp, Mount Buller

In the last weekend of July, 12 primary students (year 4 – year 6) from Brighton and Cornish Campuses, travelled to Mt Buller to enjoy a weekend of skiing and snowboarding.

For students who had skied and boarded prior to the weekend, it was an opportunity to enjoy a wonderful weekend with their friends. For others, it was their first time enjoying the snow and learning how to ski or snowboard. Each student was accompanied by one of their parents.

Students spent 3.5 hours in ski school each morning and several of the parents had lessons too. In the afternoons the students and parents skied or boarded together.

The camp provided an opportunity for families to build relationships through sharing each other’s company on the slopes, over meals and in front of the lodge’s fire place. It also enabled families to enjoy a weekend in the snow without having to organise the logistics of transport and accommodation themselves.

Our National award winning program is going from strength to strength and our Primary Development Camp is an exciting addition to it. In 2011 the program will be broadened to cater for students in year 2 to year 6. Students and parents of all abilities and disciplines are welcome. If you’ve never skied or boarded before, we encourage you to consider having a go.

Thank you to the students, parents and Ms Louise Daniels (HPE Staff Member) who supported the program. It was greatly appreciated!

For information about next year’s program, please speak to Mr Gould, Head of Snowsports, in the HSC.

St Leonard’s Snowsports – Information Night Update!

It has been over two years since I first started in the position of Head of Snowsports at St Leonard’s College. What a wonderful time it has been meeting new faces and re-acquainting myself with the current Friends of Snowsports. I have enjoyed bringing energy and enthusiasm to the Sport of Snowsports!

Since my appointment a number of initiatives have been implemented, including the  Cornish Campus and Brighton Campus Snowsports Information Nights. On Wednesday 10 March, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of enthusiastic students and parents who attended the Cornish Campus Snowsports Information Night. This years interest was double the number of participants than last year. The Brighton Campus Information Night on Wednesday 17 March, was fabulous to say the least. In front of a packed auidence in the TCW Theatre, Mr Ian Whiteside, President of the Snowsports Committee, and myself spoke briefly about the program of activities. I was overwhelmed by the number of interested family members in Snowsports this year.

Thank you to Mr Ian Whiteside and Committee Members who supported this onging event!

Our next Snowsports Committee Meeting will be on Wednesday 14 April, 6.30 pm – 8.00 pm in the HSC Seminar Room. Interested parents are welcome to attend.

Staff Appointments

Congratulations to Mrs Luisa Ingram, Mrs Anneke Thomson and Ms Louise Daniels who have been appointed to assist with the 2010 St Leonard’s College Snowsports Program.

Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver – Results

Joh Shaw has narrowly missed out on progressing past the qualifying stage of the ladies’ snowboard parallel giant slalom.

On a wet and windy morning at Cypress Mountain, a large crowd still turned up to support the 30 snowboarders that entered the competition.

Each athlete received two qualifying runs, one from the blue gate and one from the red gate, with the top 16 moving through to the next stage of the event.

Shaw’s first run was part of the 10th pairing and the Victorian clocked a 43.41 to leave herself some work to do in the second run.

With a number of riders coming unstuck on the tricky surface, Shaw put her all into her final run and stopped the clock at 42.69, leaving her with a combined time of 1:26.10.

It left Shaw sitting in 19th place and just half a second outside 16th place and qualification.

“My first run I was a little nervous at the top – this year my first runs have not been that strong, and I tried to fight it but it just got the better of me,” Shaw said. “The second run was really good, not good enough, but I think I had a good time.”

“I fell in Torino and I didn’t want to do that so maybe I was being a bit too careful.”

“The course was really tough, it was really bumpy, soft and hard in sections and tough to see – you got rain on your goggles so you were kind of just feeling your way down.”

“I’ve still got three more World Cups in Russia, Italy and Spain so I’ll see what happens there.”

“Probably the most important thing for me (for the rest of the season) is to get my riding going again, and if I can get a podium I’d be quite happy with that.”

“Slalom is our next race, and I love slalom, so you never know.”

Austrian Marion Kreiner set the quickest qualification time of 1:22.52, half a second clear of France’s Nicollen Sauerbreij.

The next stage of competition will commence at 12.15pm (Vancouver time).
